Jen Townsend and Anne Holman both attended The Columbus College of Art and Design with a strong passion for their chosen mediums, Jen started as a painter and Anne started out in sculpture and print making. Not long after starting school they both, independently, discovered the art of metal smithing and they fell in love. After learning all they could at CCAD, Jen and Anne continued to follow their new passion after graduation. They met when Jen was a student and Anne was a visiting speaker, they crossed paths a few times before joining the same studio space and, eventually, decided to open a brick and mortar location together.
The Smithery opened in October of 2014 with studio space for both Anne and Jen, a workshop area, and a large retail store that now features almost 100 artists. While the shop showcases many local artists they have also worked hard to find amazing artists from across the country (and the world for that matter). They love bringing new styles and techniques to share with their customers in Columbus, Ohio. The shop focuses mainly on jewelry but you will also find a great collection of unique, hand made items including ceramics, textiles, hand printed cards and paper goods, and that’s just the beginning!
Anne and Jen love sharing the unique techniques and styles of metal smithing that many folks don’t see every day. They also love discovering new art for their shop, and any of you artists out there that are interested in being featured at The Smithery can apply online. You should also be sure to visit their online shop, featuring over 400 pieces from their collection where you can view a beautiful sampling before visiting the store or order online when you find that special piece that catches your eye.
Each week Anne and Jen bring a variety of classes and workshops to their Grandview location. All of their offerings, along with photos of past student’s work, are available to view on their website. They have a variety of classes throughout the week, all classes are beginner level and are appropriate for teens and older. Each workshop includes all of your materials, tools as well as a professional metalsmith to teach you the best techniques. With the variety of styles and options to choose from you will walk away with a finished piece that is truly unique. You can also schedule your own private workshop if you have a piece in mind or set up one of their private (and very popular) Make Your Own Wedding Bands workshops.
The Smithery also offers a metal stamping make-and-take workshop that is very family friendly, and great for all ages. The prices are a la carte (starting as low as $4!) so you can easily bring the whole family to create their own, one-of-a-kind piece, without breaking the bank. You can find their full schedule of classes and workshops online here. Also be sure to sign up for their email newsletter to hear about the schedule earlier than anyone else and to ensure you get the first seats in their popular classes before they fill up!
Jen and Anne both work out of their studio spaces at The Smithery, you can find their art in the store and online.
