Nicole Harrison, Store Manager and Owner of Pure Roots Boutique in Westerville

Handmade art and community pride converge at Pure Roots, a hometown consignment gift shop run by central Ohio native, Nicole Harrison. As a young child, Nicole’s love for jewelry shopping with her mother ignited a desire to open her own store. As time went on and her passion for entrepreneurship grew, Nicole decided she wanted to develop an outlet for her creative neighbors and friends. The result is a hub of artistic expression, featuring gifts from makers across the state, nestled in the heart of uptown Westerville.

Pure Roots got its start in a modest retail space just off the main drag of uptown nearly 5 years ago. Nicole had no problem filling, and inevitably outgrowing the first store. Less than a year later, Pure Roots moved to its new home on State St. and has been there ever since. Today, each wall is decorated with hand painted signs for every room in the house. A display of necklaces made from vintage findings can be found next to a bowl of magnets with cheeky sayings. On the hunt for the right gift for the person who has everything? Browse through the endless stacks of t-shirts, pillows, purses, scarves, and candles and you’re sure to find the perfect present.

There are always fresh finds at Pure Roots since the shop accepts product on a rolling basis. Nicole prides herself on curating only the best items for her store by focusing on the balance between uniqueness, quality, and value. With over 100+ artists represented in the boutique, preventing competition is a top priority. Makers interested in showcasing their art can email the shop directly, info@purerootsboutique.com, with information about their product and price points, as well as links to social media accounts.

While curating beautiful art comes naturally to Nicole, learning the business side of running a business is an ongoing journey. She gives credit to the programming offered by the Economic & Community Development Institute as well as the mentors she’s found along the way. When it comes to being a small business owner, Nicole says, “You have to love it. You can’t get into this for the money because you’ll be disappointment very quickly. Keep perspective while you follow your dreams and you’ll be successful.”
